World History Bulletin

The World History Bulletin, founded in 1983, was the first publication of World History Association. Initially it served as a newsletter for the Association and was published under the auspices of Drexel University.
From the start, however, the Bulletin contained important statements by the leading practitioners and scholars of world history at the time. Kevin Reilly, the Association’s first president and celebrated scholar of world history, wrote in that very first issue:
"What brings us together is a conviction that the time has come for world history. The world has become too small for us to ignore the majority of its inhabitants. If we are not the first generation to live in a single world, united by its vulnerability to annihilation, we are least reminded continually of our common pedestal. Satellite photos and tapes, space shuttle flights, and campaigns advertising “world class” products underscore the dimensions of the new ecumene. The world has replaced the nation-state as the arena of life or death, and we continue to ignore its boundaries at our peril.”
Today the World History Bulletin is an annual e-journal that features research essays, experiential learning case studies, and classroom activities. Also welcomed are short interviews with designers, artists, writers, and scholars and small roundtables on a book, film, or other work. Each issue typically includes book reviews as well. Editor-in-chief of the Bulletin since 2022 is Joseph M. Snyder, associate professor of history at Southeast Missouri State University.
It is a tradition of the Bulletin that each issue is focused on a particular theme or topic. These are proposed by a WHA member who serve(s) as guest editor(s). Among recent themes:
“Food in World History”
guest editor: Jeffrey Pilcher, University of Toronto

Submission Guidelines: Research and pedagogical articles must address some aspect of world or global history. Articles should be between 1,500 and 6,000 words in length, including endnotes. Longer articles may be accepted at the discretion of the editor-in-chief. Book reviews should not exceed 1,000 words. All submissions must adhere to the style, format, and documentation requirements outlined in the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. The Bulletin uses endnote citations rather than footnotes. Manuscripts should be double-spaced, use 12-point Times New Roman font, and follow American English spelling conventions (e.g., "favorite" rather than "favourite"). Please write in the past tense, rather than the literary present tense, and avoid passive voice. Submissions that do not meet these requirements will be returned prior to preliminary review.
