Our partnership with H21, History for the 21st Century
The World History Association is immensely proud of our collaborative partnership since 2021 with History for the 21st Century (“H/21”). Founded in 2019 and led by several WHA members, H121 is an effort by scholars and practitioners to support faculty who are introducing today's students to a deep study of world history. Content-rich materials produced by H/21 are combined with effective pedagogy and curriculum design strategies. They center primary sources and multimedia materials to encourage students to perceive transnational pattens and events in history.

H/21 materials are free, inquiry-based, and student-centered. They are designed for introductory/survey courses but frankly it doesn't matter what school, college, or university uses them. H/21 does not tell educators how they should teach courses. Instead, educators can freely adapt these resources and materials to the needs of specific classrooms and a wide array of of students.
Currently H/21 has produced an exemplary series of peer-reviewed and peer-tested modules revolving around key themes in world history, including:

-
Africans and the African Diaspora in the First World War
-
Atlantic Piracy in Global Perspective, c. 1500-1750
-

Our partnership with the OER Project

The OER (Open Educational Resources) Project, founded in 2011 as the "Big History Project" and renamed in 2019, provides free curricula and course materials for courses focused on world history (including World History AP®). The materials they provide include carefully scaffolded units and lessons that feature activities, readings, audio recordings and videos, and writing assessments.

The world history curriculum and materials were designed by two WHA members: lifetime member Bob Bain and former WHA president Trevor Getz. It is focused on the interconnected world and is divided into three sections:
-
Origins to Present
-
1200 to Present
-
1750 to Present

The world history curriculum focuses on narrative and skills-building. Students put the narratives of history into context, looking for evidence to support, extend, and challenge their thinking. The course uses three course frames—communities, networks, and production and distribution—to help students develop a framework for organizing their thinking.
The curriculum centers reading a variety of texts, including primary sources, just as historians do, with a dedicated close-reading approach. World History also aligns with AP® historical thinking skills and reasoning practices, such as contextualization, sourcing, causation, comparison, and continuity and change over time (CCOT), as well as developing writing skills to prepare students for advanced high-school and college coursework.

In addition, the OER Project has established the OER Project Teacher Community to exchange ideas, ask questions, and engage in conversations about teaching and learning. They offer live virtual webinars monthly.
The OER Project believes in and supports the work of educators. Since 2020, they have been providing significant financial support to K-12 educators who wish to attend the annual World History Association conferences. The WHA has been grateful for this partnership and looks forward to continuing to build connections between our membership and the OER Project.
