The 36th annual World History Association conference will be held at the University of Pittsburgh from June 27-29, 2027.

The WHA is returning to Pittsburgh where we held a very successful conference at the University of Pittsburgh in 2023. Pittsburgh has a rich history, not only within the United States, but globally.  The city features a diverse population, exciting local food culture, ambitious, environmental initiatives, and is located at the site where two significant rivers--the Allegheny and the Monongahela--merge into the Ohio River.  Rich in museums--including the Carnegie, Museum of Art and the Andy Warhol Museum--cultural attractions and a number of world-class universities, the city offers numerous opportunities for attendees to explore.

We are so excited to be hosting this conference this coming June in Pittsburgh.   The conference. theme.--"Living in Interesting Times: Inflection Points in World History"--could not be more relevant.  There's no question that global society has reached some sort of inflection point.   How that will unfold and and what the repercussions will be is history in the making.  We know that we can learn much from inflection points in the past.   The intersections between societies and cultures that have occurred in world history offer countless opportunities to reflect, particularly in light of the inflection points of the present.

 

There are several new innovations at this year's conference.  Most notably, the conference will feature a Research and Writing Collaborative (RWC) for 12 - 16 people who would like the opportunity for deep engagement with fellow historians around the research and writing process. Group members will meet in 90-minute sessions during the conference to share their original written work (which will be read in advance of the conference by a number of other participants), and discuss problems of practice, and engage in deep dialogue about the discipline. These sessions will be open for all conference members to attend.

Also exciting is that in addition to annual World History Association, attendees, we will be joined by members of the Society for the History of American Foreign Policy (SHAFR).  

 

The heart of this year's conference will take place from June 27 to June 29, 2027.   On June 26 as well as June 30, we will offer a number of pre-and post-conference excursions. Watch this space for details.
